Easter Island, a Chilean territory, is a remote volcanic island in Polynesia. This beautiful island is known for its incredible nature, but also for about 1000 monumental statues called moai, created by inhabitants, the early Rapa Nui people, during the 13th–16th centuries. In 1995, UNESCO designated Easter Island as a World Heritage Site, protecting much of the island within the Rapa Nui National Park.
